Wilderness Travel has announced three new travel itineraries for 2025, crafted in partnership with Roger Williams, a renowned figure in the adventure travel industry with nearly 40 years of experience. Williams, a veteran guide, cultural scholar, and storyteller, brings his extensive expertise to these new expeditions, promising immersive experiences in some of the world’s most remote locations.

The new itineraries include:

Eastern Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh

This 20-day journey, commencing and concluding in Kolkata, offers an in-depth exploration of northeast India’s Arunachal Pradesh and the lesser-visited regions of eastern Bhutan. Under the guidance of Roger Williams, travelers will traverse the lush hills of Arunachal Pradesh, crossing the Sella Pass to reach Tawang Monastery. Here, they will engage with the Monpa people and delve into their ancient Buddhist traditions. The trip continues into Bhutan, where visitors will discover traditional villages, imposing monasteries such as the 17th-century Trashigang Dzong, and participate in vibrant masked dance festivals. While not physically demanding, the trip involves long travel days, moderate to high altitudes, and potentially challenging transportation conditions.

Central Asia Explorer

This expedition covers Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan—collectively known as the four ‘Stans.’ The journey explores the rich historical and ethnic landscapes of these countries, including the Silk Road oasis of Samarkand and the alpine lake Issyk-Kul, nestled among the Tien Shan mountains. Roger Williams will lead travelers through ancient bazaars, local families, and traditional artisan workshops, with visits to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the medieval city of Bukhara and the desert town of Khiva. The trip is not expected to be physically demanding, but participants should be ready for rustic accommodations, long travel days, and challenging transportation conditions.

Southwest China: Treasures of Sichuan and Guangxi

This 18-day adventure focuses on the cultural and natural wonders of Sichuan and Guangxi provinces. Beginning in Chengdu, known for its UNESCO-recognized cuisine, travelers will visit the giant panda reserve and enjoy a Sichuan opera performance. The journey continues to the Dujiangyan Panda Base, the sacred peaks of Mt. Qingcheng and Mt. Emei, and the UNESCO-listed Dazu cliffside cave temples with their massive Buddha sculptures. The final stop is Guilin, famous for its dramatic limestone formations. While the trip is not expected to be physically strenuous, it will involve some long travel days and demanding transportation conditions.

These new itineraries promise unique and enriching experiences, reflecting Roger Williams’s deep knowledge and passion for cultural exploration.
