The Tasmanian Government has announced a significant step toward implementing a state-wide smart ticketing system for the public transport network, following the finalization of an agreement with Cubic Transportation Systems.
Transport Minister Eric Abetz emphasized that the project will enhance payment options, allowing passengers to pay using bank cards or smart devices while also providing integrated real-time journey planning. “You’ll be able to pay for your bus or ferry trip with a simple tap of your preferred bank card, phone, or watch,” Minister Abetz stated.
He added that passengers will no longer need to worry about forgetting their travel cards, as they can utilize any payment method available to them without requiring pre-loaded travel zones or top-ups. “This world-leading smart ticketing system will offer more choices for planning and paying, making boarding quicker and public transport more convenient. It builds on our commitment to provide live tracking for all Tasmanians by December.”
This announcement follows the successful launch of a reduced fare scheme in June, which has seen over 2 million half-price bus trips recorded. “We continue to provide half-price bus and ferry fares across our network, helping to ease the cost of living for Tasmanians,” Minister Abetz concluded.
