United Kingdom: Update on the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Mary

In light of the announcement regarding the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system in November 2023, we provide an overview of the current requirements.

Purpose of the UK ETA

The ETA serves as advance permission to travel to or transit through the UK for individuals who do not require a visa or have existing UK immigration status. Approval of an ETA allows for multiple entries into the UK.

Who Needs a UK ETA?

All visitors to the UK who do not need a visa for stays under six months are required to possess a valid ETA, unless they fall under one of the following exemptions:

UK or Irish nationals

Individuals holding a UK entry visa or residence permit

Individuals with an Irish permit who do not require a visa to enter the UK

Non-UK nationals who need a visa to enter the UK

For example, a U.S. national attending a business meeting in London will need an ETA once this requirement is enforced for U.S. citizens. It is important to note that an ETA is necessary for airside transit as well as for visiting the UK.

Cost of a UK ETA

The application fee for the ETA is £10, in addition to any applicable service fees, payable upon submission of the application online.

Validity of a UK ETA

Once approved, the ETA will remain valid for either two years from the date of approval or until the passport expires, whichever occurs first.

Process to Obtain a UK ETA

Applications for the ETA can be submitted online via CIBT starting November 1, 2024. The processing time is typically up to three working days from the submission date; however, if UK authorities require additional information, processing may take longer. It is advisable to submit applications at least 30 days in advance.

Documents Required for UK ETA

Applicants must ensure their passports are valid for a minimum of three months beyond the intended departure date from the UK and should not be issued more than ten years prior.

UK ETA Implementation Timeline

Nationals from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE must obtain ETA approval before travel.
Nationals from non-EU countries and some additional nations will be required to secure ETA approval for travel starting January 8, 2025.
All other nationalities must obtain ETA approval for travel from April 2, 2025, with applications opening on March 5, 2025.
Travelers are encouraged to check the official UK government website for the latest information regarding nationalities and timelines related to the UK ETA program.
