Former President Donald Trump’s team is reevaluating his travel plans following serious threats to his life, including those from Iran and two recent assassination attempts. Sources familiar with the discussions indicate that these considerations could significantly alter the campaign dynamics as Trump approaches the final stretch of the election.
Advisers are exploring the security of event locations and the possibility of reducing Trump’s reliance on his branded aircraft for travel. The Secret Service has previously recommended modifications to Trump’s routines after two assassination attempts occurred within two months.
The threats from Iran are particularly concerning, stemming from Trump’s 2020 order to eliminate Iranian General Qassim Suleimani. These threats have been compounded by reported hacking attempts targeting the campaign’s officials. On Tuesday, two federal intelligence officials briefed Trump on the Iranian threats, although the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment on the details.
National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett condemned Iran’s actions, emphasizing that the U.S. views these threats as a critical national security issue. He noted that the U.S. government has issued warnings to Iran to cease such activities or face serious consequences.
In response to the heightened security concerns, Trump’s team employed multiple planes to transport him and his staff to an event in North Carolina this week, highlighting a shift in their travel strategy.
Trump has historically posed challenges for security personnel due to his established routines and preference for personal engagement with supporters at his properties. Recent advice has indicated that at least one upcoming event could not be sufficiently secured, leading Trump to inform his advisers that he would forgo playing golf, a key source of his relaxation.
The most recent assassination attempt took place on September 15 at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. A suspect, Ryan W. Routh, 58, was apprehended after attempting to target Trump with a semi-automatic rifle while concealed in nearby shrubbery. A Secret Service agent spotted Routh and opened fire, prompting him to flee before being arrested on a nearby highway. Routh faces multiple firearm charges, and federal prosecutors are pursuing an attempted assassination charge.
