Free Travel Initiative Launched for New Employees

Over 9,000 individuals have benefited from free or discounted travel as they embark on new jobs, thanks to the Workwise scheme, an award-winning initiative in the region.

Managed by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) in partnership with local bus, rail, and tram operators, the program offers new employees free public transport for the first eight weeks of employment, followed by a 50% discount for an additional four weeks.

Launched initially in 2003 by TfWM’s predecessor, Centro, the scheme aims to alleviate a significant barrier for new workers: the cost of commuting before they receive their first paycheck.
