Travel chaos ensued on the M5 overnight as heavy rain and subsequent flooding left motorists stranded, prompting emergency rescues.
The Avon Fire and Rescue Service responded around 1 AM, rescuing three individuals trapped in their vehicles. Currently, the M5 remains closed in both directions: the northbound lanes between Junctions 16 and 14, and the southbound lanes between Junctions 14 and 15, as emergency services work to address the flooding.
This weather event follows a week of persistent rain across the country. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the Midlands and southern England, which will remain active until 9 AM.
As of 9:30 AM, the Environment Agency reported 66 flood warnings in place across England, indicating expected flooding, along with 122 flood alerts suggesting that flooding is possible. Rain is forecasted to clear later on Friday, but colder conditions are anticipated for Saturday.
