Japan is encouraging Americans to visit with free domestic flights

Japan Airlines is launching an enticing initiative to encourage international travelers, particularly Americans, to explore more of the country. The airline is offering complimentary domestic flights to passengers who book round-trip international flights with Japan Airlines.

This promotion allows travelers to connect to any of Japan Airlines’ 64 domestic airports after arriving at one of the major international gateways, including Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports, Kansai International in Osaka, and Chubu Centrair in Nagoya. To qualify for the free domestic flight, customers must book both their international and domestic flights in the same reservation.

The offer is currently available for travelers from select countries, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. Additional countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, China, and Taiwan will be included as the promotion rolls out throughout September.

While this initiative aims to enhance travel experiences within Japan, there are some stipulations. Travelers from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will incur a stopover fee of $100 if they remain in their first Japanese destination for more than 24 hours. However, no additional charges apply for travelers from other eligible countries regarding long stopovers.

Japan Airlines has designed this promotion to promote tourism beyond major cities like Tokyo and Osaka. The airline encourages visitors to explore lesser-known destinations such as Hokkaido for its stunning national parks and skiing opportunities or Wakayama for its historic temples.

As Japan anticipates a record influx of visitors in 2024, this initiative aligns with the government’s goal of boosting tourism to regional areas while alleviating overtourism in popular spots. With no set end date for the promotion announced yet, travelers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to experience more of what Japan has to offer.
