The Travel Industry Council’s executive director has stated that the influx of mainland Chinese visitors to Hong Kong is unlikely to return to pre-pandemic levels within the next two years, despite a noticeable increase in both group and individual travel.
Fanny Yeung Shuk-fan highlighted that during the upcoming National Day “golden week” holiday, from October 1 to October 7, Hong Kong is anticipated to welcome between 1.15 million and 1.2 million mainland visitors. This figure represents a 20 percent increase compared to last year, yet it still falls short of approximately 75 percent of the visitor numbers recorded in 2018. Yeung noted that a deteriorating global economy and a shortage of tour guides are contributing factors affecting the city’s tourism sector.
