Authorities in Bali are set to implement a temporary ban on the development of new hotels, resorts, and villas in some of the island’s most frequented tourist areas. This decision follows concerns over overtourism, which has led to issues such as overcrowding and increased crime rates.
Indonesian Minister for Tourism and Creative Economies, Sandiaga Uno, announced that the moratorium is scheduled to take effect in early October 2024. Speaking at the Bali International Air Show, he stated, “We have submitted it, waiting for the schedule from the leadership. Hopefully, it will be done soon. The target is to implement it in early October.”
The ban will primarily affect popular regions such as Canggu and Uluwatu, where tourism-related businesses contribute significantly to the local economy, accounting for 80% of Bali’s economic activities.
