As pandemic restrictions have lifted, Vermont has seen a notable surge in tourism, leading to a robust economic rebound. However, this influx of visitors has also triggered a housing crisis, marked by a decrease in available housing and a rise in costs. This trend has resulted in the conversion of second homes into permanent residences and the transformation of primary homes into short-term rentals.
One of the key attractions impacted by these changes is the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, which was completed just before the severe flooding of 2023. The grand opening, featuring Governor Scott and other dignitaries biking the trail from St. Albans to St. Johnsbury, was expected to draw significant crowds. Unfortunately, relentless flooding washed out several sections, delaying the celebration and disrupting numerous hospitality businesses along the route.
Thanks to federal funding, the state was able to restore the trail and is planning another grand opening for 2024. However, July’s floods inflicted further damage, washing out areas that had been repaired in the previous year. Currently, portions of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail remain closed as officials work to address the ongoing challenges.
