Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop has announced that the Scottish government plans to reinstate free bus travel for asylum seekers by 2026. Her statement follows a vote by Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs), who supported a motion from the Scottish Greens advocating for the swift return of the policy.
The initiative was previously cut in August as part of broader public spending reductions. During a debate at Holyrood, Hyslop acknowledged the “frustration, disappointment, and anger” surrounding the policy’s removal, assuring that the government would seek funding to support its reinstatement in the future.
The motion to restore the free travel policy was passed with a vote tally of 68 in favor, 27 against, and 20 abstentions. However, it is important to note that the vote is non-binding, meaning that the government is not obligated to implement the decision.
The Scottish Greens expressed appreciation for Hyslop’s commitment but emphasized the need for a concrete “plan of action” moving forward.
