World Mental Health Day: Navigating Depression and Anxiety While Traveling

by Mary

As someone who has struggled with mild depression and anxiety for many years, I view travel as a double-edged sword. Challenges such as lost luggage, delayed transportation, and unfamiliar surroundings can be particularly overwhelming for those of us who may be more sensitive to stress.

Throughout my nearly three decades of traveling, I have experienced profound moments of homesickness in places like Sarajevo and anxiety in Azerbaijan. These low points serve as reminders of the emotional hurdles that can arise during my journeys.

However, despite these challenges, travel has also provided immense joy and enrichment. From a transformative summer in Salamanca that boosted both my Spanish skills and self-confidence to an enlightening festival in India involving coconuts and a group of holy men, my experiences across more than 55 countries have been both refreshing and transformative. These adventures not only thrill me but often act as a source of solace and rejuvenation in my life.
