Guinea’s military junta, led by General Mamady Doumbouya, has imposed a travel ban on ministers, requiring them to obtain permission for any trips abroad. The announcement, made by the government’s general secretary on Thursday, is effective immediately and will remain in place until the end of the year. The statement directed all ministers currently on foreign missions to conclude their activities and return to Guinea.
Government spokesman Ousmane Gaoual Diallo explained that the decision aims to reduce public spending and enhance governmental efficiency while ensuring optimal management of state resources. He noted that senior government officials and diplomats will still be permitted to represent the country internationally.
Doumbouya, who took power in a coup in September 2021, initially committed to restoring civilian rule by the end of 2024 but has since indicated that this timeline may not be met. Some government members have expressed support for Doumbouya’s candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.
