Alipay+, the mobile payment platform developed by Ant International, has reported a significant rise in cross-border transactions in 2024, as travelers increasingly rely on familiar payment applications while abroad.
The number of users accessing Alipay+ tripled in the first nine months of this year, underscoring a shift in the travel industry toward digital payment solutions and marketing technologies.
“The role of tourism in driving economic growth makes it essential for the industry to pursue innovation and forge new partnerships to benefit a broader audience,” stated Douglas Feigin, president of Ant International. “Our Alipay+ solution has evolved to encompass cross-border payments, destination marketing, and digital lifestyle services, and we are witnessing widespread adoption as more consumers leverage technology to enhance their travel experiences.”
Travelers are increasingly using their preferred payment apps, including Alipay+ partners such as GCash and Touch ‘n Go, to make purchases while traveling. This service allows users to pay as they do at home and has gained popularity in destinations like Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. This trend has enabled businesses of all sizes to attract more tourists.
Spending habits among travelers have also shifted post-pandemic. While overall spending has risen, tourists are now prioritizing experiences—such as dining and visiting attractions—over shopping. For instance, spending on food and beverages via Alipay+ increased by 80%, while spending on attractions rose by 50%. Additionally, Alipay+ has streamlined transportation bookings, with payments for ride-hailing and taxis soaring by 120%, facilitating independent exploration of new destinations.
