Competition Intensifies in Premium Domestic Travel as United Launches Next

After 1,200 days, I finally boarded a United Airlines narrowbody jet featuring the new “Next” interior, an experience that began with a media event back in 2021. Much has changed since then, and I was eager to fully immerse myself in the upgraded United experience.

The airline is currently engaged in a fierce competition with Delta to claim the title of America’s premier airline. Delta has begun installing free Viasat Wi-Fi across its fleet, while United is introducing Starlink for the same purpose. Additionally, Delta has outfitted nearly all its mainline aircraft with seatback screens, and United is now following suit. Both airlines have also opened premium business class lounges, a trend echoed by JetBlue.

My journey from Newark to Seattle began several days prior to departure, when United’s iOS app sent a notification about the option to pre-order food and beverages. This new feature allows economy class passengers to browse the full in-flight menu and select items in advance, enhancing the overall travel experience.
