Air travel between India and Canada is facing potential challenges as diplomatic relations between the two countries worsen, particularly during the upcoming winter months.
The situation has been compounded by Canada’s recent reduction in student visa issuances, creating significant strain on travel between the nations. The India-Canada air travel market primarily caters to students, immigrants, business travelers, and individuals visiting friends and family.
In response to changing demand, Air India plans to double its Delhi-Toronto service with three additional flights starting November 1. Meanwhile, Air Canada is set to resume its seasonal Mumbai route and introduce flights to New Delhi via London to Calgary.
However, these expansions occur amid declining yields. An airline executive noted that routes between India and Canada experienced lower yields during the typically busy July-September quarter, attributing this downturn primarily to Canada’s stricter visa policies, which have adversely affected demand.
