Slow Travel: Journeying from Seville to Lisbon by Train and Bus

Mary

In this installment of our slow travel series, we explore mindful travel options that prioritize experience over speed. Here, Austin Bush shares his recent journey from Seville, Spain, to Lisbon, Portugal, emphasizing the beauty of land travel.

After two enjoyable days in Seville, sampling tapas at various bars, it was time to return to Lisbon. While direct flights are available between the two cities, I opted for a land-based journey to experience the southern Iberian landscape more intimately.

Traveling by train was my preferred choice due to the space and comfort it offers compared to a bus. However, the limited international train connections between Spain and Portugal meant that my trip would involve a bit of complexity and time—yet that’s part of the adventure.

My route included two trains and a bus, taking me through two travel hubs over nearly 15 hours. While the journey could be completed more quickly, the essence of slow travel lies in the opportunity to explore and appreciate the scenery along the way. Here’s how I made my way from Seville to Lisbon by train and bus.
