A group of 13 students and staff from Valley City State University (VCSU) recently enjoyed a memorable hiking experience in Yellowstone National Park, taking advantage of the shade provided by the park’s trees.

The participants, enrolled in Biology 376, known as the Yellowstone Ecology course, were accompanied by professor Dr. Michelle Abshire on this annual field trip. Throughout their visit, the group explored the park’s renowned geothermal features and observed a variety of wildlife, including wolves, grizzly and black bears, bison, moose, and elk.

The curriculum also covered critical topics such as wolf reintroduction, trophic cascades, climate change impacts, and the park’s volcanic history, all of which contribute to the current ecological landscape of Yellowstone.

Later this month, the students will present their personal experiences from the trip to their classmates.

Participants included students Macy Brahos, Callen Kruger, Trista Weigelt, Kelby Gjovik, McCoy Mohl, Hannah Houle, Zach St. Aubin, Amber Kologi, Tyler Johnson, and Chase Bladow, along with faculty members Dr. Michelle Abshire, Dr. Bob Anderson, and Dr. Staci Dreyer-Larson.
