Airport officials report that the busiest travel day of the season occurred on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, marking the height of the Thanksgiving rush.
The holiday travel period kicked off last weekend and reached its peak on Wednesday, with the airport expecting around 3,700 passengers to depart that day—representing a 15% increase compared to Thanksgiving Eve travel numbers from 2023. Over the course of the long holiday weekend, Dane County Regional Airport anticipates 19% more flights will be departing than last year.
Passengers flying out of Madison are mostly headed to major hubs like Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, and Charlotte. These popular destinations are seeing more demand, prompting airlines to increase the number of flights and use larger planes. According to Michael Riechers, a spokesperson for the airport, the increased demand for flights was communicated to the airlines, and they responded by adjusting their schedules.

“The airlines have responded,” said Riechers. “They’ve sent more planes, larger planes, and in response, the greater Madison community is traveling. It’s great to see consistent growth with Thanksgiving travel as well as overall annual numbers at the airport.”
Despite the high volume of passengers, operations at the airport ran smoothly on Wednesday, with minimal delays and no significant backups in security lines. However, airport officials are urging travelers to be prepared for busy conditions, especially during peak travel hours.
Riechers advises passengers to pack their patience as they navigate the airport during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. “The employees you’re dealing with, whether at the airport or during your travel, just want to get you where you’re going safely and efficiently,” he said. “So have a smile and enjoy your time while you’re traveling. Enjoy the time while you’re here at the airport.”

In anticipation of heavy traffic and longer wait times, Riechers recommends arriving at the airport early to ensure ample time for check-in and security screening. Although the airport has managed to keep lines short so far, Thanksgiving weekend is historically one of the busiest travel periods, and delays can be expected.
“Arriving early gives you peace of mind and ensures you have enough time to go through security without feeling rushed,” he added. Travelers should also be prepared for potential delays and keep an eye on their flight status as the holiday weekend progresses.
Looking ahead, Riechers noted that around 3,500 passengers are expected to fly in and out of Dane County Regional Airport on Sunday, December 1, marking the end of the holiday travel rush. While this is still a busy day, airport staff is confident they can manage the volume of passengers with the ongoing adjustments made to accommodate higher traffic.
