In a bid to ease the pressure on popular tourist spots and promote under-explored regions, the Indian government has launched a strategic initiative to rebalance tourism across the country. Selection of New Tourist Destinations
As of mid-October 2024, the Ministry of Tourism received 87 project proposals, totaling over Rs 8,000 crore in costs. After reviewing the submissions, 40 projects from 23 states were approved, with a total budget of Rs 3,295.76 crore. Selected sites include Rang Ghar in Sivasagar (Assam), Matsyagandha Lake in Saharsa (Bihar), the proposed Town Square in Porvorim (Goa), and Orchha (Madhya Pradesh). These locations were chosen for their potential to become major tourism attractions with the right development.
The aim is not only to enhance the infrastructure of these sites but also to market them as global tourist destinations. The government plans to focus on branding and promoting these lesser-known regions internationally to attract global visitors.
