A new 120 km river cruise along the Narmada River, linking Gujarat’s Statue of Unity with Madhya Pradesh’s Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, is set to boost regional tourism and connectivity. The initiative promises travelers a unique experience that highlights the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and spiritual significance of both states. This project is part of a larger plan to develop National Waterway-73 and promote inland water transport, with Rs 1.16 crore allocated for the project’s launch and an additional Rs 61 crore set aside for infrastructure, including floating jetties at key river points.
The collaborative effort involves the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam, and Madhya Pradesh Tourism. The floating jetties will be strategically placed, with Madhya Pradesh already securing one from Kolkata and Gujarat working on its own infrastructure. These facilities will ensure easy access for tourists and smoother travel between important locations, including Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, and Mandu in Madhya Pradesh, and Chhota Udepur and Kevadia in Gujarat.
A standout feature of the Narmada River cruise is the chance to view iconic landmarks from a fresh perspective. Passengers will pass the colossal Statue of Unity, offering breathtaking views of this national monument. The journey also takes passengers to Omkareshwar, home to one of India’s 12 sacred Jyotirlingas. This cruise is more than just a mode of transport; it offers a cultural and spiritual exploration, connecting travelers to India’s rich heritage while providing a scenic and serene experience.
Sustainability is central to the Narmada River cruise. River cruising is considered one of the most eco-friendly modes of transport, providing a greener alternative to traditional travel options and helping reduce tourism’s carbon footprint. This initiative aligns with the government’s focus on promoting sustainable tourism and offers visitors an immersive experience in nature. The Narmada River cruise is set to become a model for eco-conscious travel, combining environmental and cultural value.
As river tourism gains momentum across India, with services already operational along the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, the Narmada River cruise enhances India’s appeal as a premier river tourism destination. The project is expected to further develop inland waterways, offering travelers an enriching and environmentally friendly way to explore India’s diverse landscapes.
