Japan’s travel budgets for the upcoming year-end and New Year holiday period are expected to reach a record high for the second consecutive year, according to a survey by travel agency JTB released on Thursday.
The increase is attributed to rising accommodation prices and stronger demand for trips to distant destinations.
For domestic travel, the average budget is estimated at ¥43,000 ($286) per person, marking an increase of ¥2,000 compared to last year.
Around 28 million people are expected to travel domestically, a number that remains almost unchanged from the previous year.
Despite the increase in costs, the extended holiday period, which includes up to nine consecutive days off from December 28 to January 5, is likely to keep travel plans strong.
International travel is projected to rise by 13%, with 520,000 people expected to travel overseas. However, this still represents only 62.9% of the pre-pandemic levels in fiscal 2019. The average budget for overseas trips is ¥273,000, reflecting the ongoing challenges of overseas inflation and a weak yen.
