South Korean Police Weigh Travel Ban on President Yoon Over Martial Law

by Mary

South Korean police are reportedly considering an overseas travel ban on President Yoon Suk Yeol amid an investigation into his imposition of martial law last week. According to Yonhap News Agency, the police are looking into the controversial decision to declare martial law, although repeated attempts to reach police for comment have gone unanswered.

In a related development, prosecutors detained former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun on Sunday. Kim is accused of advising President Yoon to implement the brief but dramatic martial law, making him the first individual arrested in connection with the case.

President Yoon managed to avoid an impeachment attempt by opposition lawmakers in parliament on Sunday. Most lawmakers from his ruling party boycotted the vote, preventing the opposition from securing the two-thirds majority required to suspend his presidential powers.
