Melbourne Airport is set for its busiest international summer on record, with more than 4.8 million passengers expected to pass through the terminals between December 13 and January 27. Of this total, over 1.8 million will be international travellers.
In anticipation of the surge, the airport has been upgrading its terminal and road infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of passengers. Authorities are advising travellers to allow an additional 30 minutes for their journey to the airport to avoid delays.
Melbourne Airport Chief Executive, Lorie Argus, expressed excitement over the busy holiday season, noting the importance of planning ahead.
“We’re excited to be part of so many Australians’ Christmas plans. However, with the large volume of travellers this year, advance planning will help ensure a smooth and stress-free start to your journey,” Argus said.
With ongoing construction of the new elevated express roadway, the airport’s car parks will be operating with fewer spaces. Argus urged travellers to book parking online in advance, especially as weekends are expected to see full capacity. Booking ahead also ensures the best rates.
“Anyone planning to park at the airport should expect crowded car parks and allow extra time to find a space,” she said.
Looking ahead, Argus stressed that the airport’s infrastructure will soon be better equipped to handle the increased demand.
“The growing passenger numbers underline the need for the construction of Melbourne Airport’s third runway, which was recently approved by the federal government,” she added.
