Peoria Airport Prepares for Surge in Holiday Travel

by Mary

As the holiday season approaches, Peoria International Airport is bracing for a significant increase in travelers, with an estimated 25,000 passengers expected to pass through the airport next week. This number represents half of the airport’s typical traffic for the entire month of December, highlighting the seasonal spike in travel.

Gene Olsen, Director of Airports, shared that Peoria International set a record for Thanksgiving weekend traffic and anticipates similar numbers for the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

To ensure a smooth travel experience, Olsen advises passengers to arrive early. “Get here early. The ticket counters close 45 minutes before the flight, so if you show up 44 minutes before and have a large checked bag, you’re not getting on,” he said.

Additionally, Olsen recommended a practical tip for holiday gift-giving: avoid potential delays at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) by leaving gifts unwrapped. “Bring wrapping paper and wrap your gifts after you arrive at your destination,” he suggested.
