Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has reached a significant milestone, welcoming its 50 millionth passenger of 2024 during a record-breaking travel year. The honor went to Danny Reynolds, who flew in from Utah with his family on Tuesday.
Reynolds, a frequent traveler through Sky Harbor, expressed surprise at being the 50 millionth passenger. “We travel through here frequently, and to be the 50 millionth, I wouldn’t imagine that. Things move so smoothly and efficiently here, so it doesn’t feel like I’m the 50 millionth,” Reynolds told Arizona’s Family.
Following a record-setting 2023, Sky Harbor is on track to surpass its previous passenger numbers in 2024. The airport is benefitting from a nationwide surge in travel, with the TSA reporting nearly 3 million travelers passing through U.S. airports on Dec. 1, the highest single-day total ever recorded.
The holiday season is fueling this continued growth, with more than 150,000 passengers passing through Sky Harbor during the Thanksgiving weekend. On a typical day, the airport sees about 1,000 flights and over 130,000 passengers.
