The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced on Tuesday that all lane closures on interstates and highways across the state will be suspended starting at 11:59 PM on Monday, December 23, 2024, through 11:59 PM on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
TDOT officials stated that the suspension of closures will help ensure smoother travel during the busy holiday season.
AAA anticipates that around 2.7 million Tennesseans will travel between December 21 and January 1, with 2.58 million of them expected to drive.
“Safety is our top priority, and with so many people expected to travel Tennessee roadways during the holidays, we want to keep traffic moving and get everyone to their destinations,” said Deputy Governor and TDOT Commissioner Butch Eley. “As always, please wear your seat belt, reduce your speed, avoid distractions, and move over for emergency vehicles.”
While most construction-related lane closures will be suspended, some long-term closures that are essential for safety will remain in place. Workers may still be present in certain construction zones, so drivers are urged to obey posted speed limits, especially in those areas. Speeding in work zones where workers are present can result in fines ranging from $250 to $500, plus court fees and possible insurance increases.
