Myanmar Sees Surge in Domestic Travel, Bagan & Beach Destinations Popular

by Mary

The Myanmar Tourism Federation (MTF) reports that domestic travel is expected to rise further in early 2025, following a strong increase in visitors to beach destinations and the Bagan region in December 2024.

The Taunggyi Tazaungdine Hot-Air Balloon Festival, which began in November, has been a significant draw for domestic travelers to Shan State in the south. Throughout the year, beach destinations have seen a steady increase in visitors, and the Bagan region has experienced consistent growth in tourist arrivals.

“In December, we saw more domestic visitors than expected,” said an MTF official. “Hotels have been fully booked since the start of the month, and there are no vacancies available. December and January are expected to see a significant rise in travel activity. The beaches are busier than usual, and many hotels in Bagan are already at capacity. There is also strong interest in short trips to destinations like Kyaiktiyo and Hpa-an, and travel to Shan State’s Kalaw, Pindaya, and Taunggyi is especially popular in December.”

While domestic tourism booms, the number of foreign visitors to Myanmar typically declines in December. Over the first 10 months of the year, Myanmar welcomed 898,971 international tourists, with the majority coming from Thailand, China, South Korea, Japan, India, and Vietnam.
