The holiday travel season is in full swing at Albany International Airport, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) predicting a nationwide 6% increase in passenger volume this year. Between now and January 2, TSA expects to screen nearly 40 million passengers, with the busiest days expected to be this Friday, next Friday, and the following Monday.
At Albany International, families and friends are already heading to their holiday destinations. Andrew, Audrey, and Alexander Connors are traveling from Tampa, Florida, to Vermont for a ski trip. They expressed relief at avoiding long TSA lines so far, though they recalled the chaos they faced during Thanksgiving travel.
“There were a lot of long lines and a lot of waiting because everyone is traveling to different places,” Andrew and Audrey said.
Other travelers shared similar experiences. Khloe Reome and Lilianna, friends from Saratoga Springs, are headed to Charlotte, North Carolina. They said they prepared for delays but remain optimistic.
The Albano family, traveling from Tampa to spend the holidays with their grandmother in the Capital Region, is hoping for snow. When asked what they liked most about Grandma’s house, one child excitedly responded, “That there will be snow!”
Pete Santos, originally from Amsterdam, New York, now living in Florida, is visiting family in the Capital Region. He’s excited for his children to experience a classic Northeast winter. “Definitely miss friends and family, especially during this time of year… hopefully, my kids get to see snow,” Santos said.
For those traveling through Albany International, TSA recommends preparing ahead to avoid delays. Tips include ensuring bags meet size requirements, keeping laptops inside backpacks, and leaving liquids over 3.4 ounces at home.
