With Christmas just days away, the holiday travel rush is in full swing, as a record-breaking 119.3 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles between now and New Year’s, according to AAA.
Buffalo Niagara International Airport felt the first wave of the holiday traffic this weekend, with long lines at check-in and extended waits at baggage claim. However, the airport has yet to see the full impact of the holiday season, with only a handful of delays and one cancellation reported.
The situation across the country has been busier. Nearly 8 million Americans are expected to fly between December 23 and January 3. Friday and Sunday were forecasted to be the busiest days for airlines before Christmas, but travel will spike again after the holiday. December 26 and 27 are anticipated to be the peak travel days as people head out for New Year’s.
The roads are also expected to see heavy traffic, as one-third of the U.S. population—and 90% of travelers—are planning to drive. Travelers at the airport shared their advice for those still preparing to travel this holiday season.
“Stay together, especially if you’re going to larger airports. It’s easy to get separated in the crowd, so stick with your group,” said Germayne Yarbrough.
Gabriela Ventura offered a similar tip: “Don’t underestimate how long it will take, especially during the holidays. Everyone’s trying to get home to see their families.”
However, the best advice this season may be to focus on the destination, not the journey. “Whether it’s your 50th Christmas or your third, you’re making memories with your family,” said Yarbrough. “Don’t let the stress of busy airports and delays take away from that.”
