Nigeria is one of the leading countries in Africa in terms of tourism potential, yet it still has a lot to learn from neighboring nations like Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and others that have embraced easier visa processes to attract more visitors. Many African countries, including Mauritius, Ghana, Seychelles, and Zanzibar, have introduced electronic visas and visa-on-arrival processes that are efficient, seamless, and designed to attract tourists.
Rwanda has taken a significant step by making the country visa-free for all African citizens, a move that President Paul Kagame says will facilitate free movement and foster greater trade and economic development with the rest of the world. Similarly, Ghana recently invited African Americans to “come home,” and has granted citizenship to 524 people in what experts say is an effort to increase tourism revenue by attracting wealthy Black Americans.
Countries like Morocco and Egypt also offer visa-on-arrival for travelers with valid U.S., UK, Schengen, or Canadian visas, offering ease of access to global tourists. In a recent Africa’s Visa Openness Index, Nigeria ranked sixth among African nations, reflecting improvements in visa processes, such as reducing the biometric visa fee for African nationals from $170 to $120 in September 2024. However, experts argue that Nigeria’s visa-on-arrival policy, despite being launched four years ago, still presents challenges for investors and tourists.
Visa openness, which measures the ease with which travelers can obtain authorization to enter a country, is essential for countries like Nigeria to fully tap into the booming global tourism industry. While Nigeria’s ranking is a step in the right direction, tourism experts believe much more needs to be done to streamline processes and attract international visitors. Countries with the fewest travel restrictions, such as Benin, Seychelles, and Rwanda, have a much stronger appeal for global tourists.
Experts urge that Nigeria must focus on making its visa process simpler and more accessible, and continue to improve its policies to create a truly welcoming environment for global travelers, as it stands at a crossroads between global tourism potential and cumbersome entry barriers.
