Nepal Warns Nationals of Employment Exploitation in Southeast Asia

by Mary

The Nepali government has issued a three-point travel advisory for citizens planning to visit Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, urging caution, particularly for those seeking foreign employment.

In a statement released on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned Nepali nationals about the risks of human trafficking and other criminal activities in these countries. The ministry specifically highlighted the exploitation of Nepali workers who are lured by promises of high-paying jobs but end up facing serious issues, including passport confiscation, long working hours (12-13 hours per day), physical abuse, and unpaid wages.

The advisory cautioned that engaging in such illegal activities can result in legal consequences. “Nepali nationals are advised against traveling on visit visas for employment purposes and to gather sufficient information about foreign companies, firms, and employers through the relevant Nepali missions abroad,” the statement said.

The ministry also emphasized the importance of verifying the legitimacy of employers. It urged individuals to personally check the authenticity of foreign firms by visiting their official websites before accepting any employment offers.
