Travelers resumed their journeys on Wednesday after a glitch at American Airlines grounded flights for about an hour on Tuesday, disrupting holiday travel plans for many passengers.
The airline had initially issued a statement acknowledging the issue, which was linked to a vendor technology malfunction that impacted its flight operating system, essential for releasing flights. American Airlines worked quickly to resolve the situation, apologizing for the inconvenience caused to its passengers.
The grounding order lasted for about an hour, affecting around 1,000 flights, or approximately 40% of American Airlines’ scheduled departures for the busy travel day, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. Despite the widespread delays, the airline reported only 13 cancellations by Tuesday afternoon.
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), a major hub for American Airlines, was particularly impacted. Nearly 60% of flights departing from DFW were delayed. The situation was further complicated by stormy weather, which led to additional flight disruptions.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued two ground stops for planes headed to DFW on Tuesday due to the adverse weather conditions. By Tuesday afternoon, the ground stop had been lifted, and operations began to return to normal.
