Peru is currently grappling with a severe sea disaster as towering waves, reaching up to 13 feet (4 meters), batter its coastline. In response to the dangerous conditions, local authorities have closed down a significant number of ports, affecting both domestic and international shipping.
As of Saturday, the country had shut down 91 of its 121 ports, with closures set to remain in effect until January 1, according to the National Emergency Operations Center. The disruption has caused widespread chaos, particularly in key coastal areas.
The powerful waves have already led to the tragic loss of three lives and caused significant damage across Peru, Ecuador, and Chile. Callao, one of Peru’s busiest and largest ports, has been severely impacted, and many beaches in the region have been closed to both locals and tourists for safety reasons.
In addition to port closures, fishing boats have been banned from venturing out to sea due to the hazardous conditions. Several beaches along the central and northern coasts of Peru have also been shut as a precaution to prevent further harm to travelers and fishermen.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and residents are urged to stay safe and follow official advisories.
