In an unexpected turn of events, Japan has emerged as a leading global tourist destination, surpassing Thailand. Japan is projected to welcome 35 million tourists this year, matching Thailand’s current numbers.
This shift is largely due to Japan’s favorable exchange rates and modern infrastructure, which have made it an increasingly attractive option for international travelers. During the first 11 months of 2024, Japan hosted over 33.3 million tourists, surpassing its previous record of 31.8 million visitors in 2019. Meanwhile, Thailand recorded 32 million visitors in the same period, showing steady growth but at a slower pace. Both countries are expected to end 2024 with 35 million visitors each.
