Indian Railways is set to usher in a new era of long-distance travel with the introduction of Vande Bharat sleeper trains. Building on the success of the Vande Bharat Express chair car trains, which have already transformed short- and medium-distance journeys, the sleeper variant promises to bring the same combination of speed, safety, and luxury to longer routes.
Currently undergoing trials at speeds of up to 180 km/h, the sleeper trains are expected to drastically reduce travel times and elevate the comfort of long-distance commuters. These successful trials, conducted in Rajasthan’s Kota Division, demonstrate the train’s potential to reshape the future of rail travel in India.
A video shared by Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlights the train’s smooth ride—showing a full glass of water remaining perfectly still as the train reached its peak speed. With trials continuing under the supervision of the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the trains will undergo a final safety evaluation by the Railway Safety Commissioner before being officially launched into regular service.
Once operational, the Vande Bharat sleeper trains will feature state-of-the-art amenities, including automatic doors, ultra-comfortable berths, onboard WiFi, and an aircraft-like design. These upgrades will enhance the travel experience on key long-distance routes like Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Delhi to Mumbai, and Howrah to Chennai.
Currently, the fastest long-distance trains in India, such as the Tejas and Rajdhani Express, have a top speed of 140 km/h. The Vande Bharat trains, however, will offer passengers faster, more efficient journeys, setting a new standard for rail travel.
With the introduction of Vande Bharat sleeper trains, Indian Railways is set to bring world-class comfort, speed, and modern amenities to commuters across the country.
