Johnson County has issued a local disaster emergency declaration in response to a winter storm, with the declaration signed by County Commissioner Brian Baird, the chair of the three-member board, on Sunday evening. The declaration, effective as of 8 p.m. Sunday, also includes a travel warning for the county.
The declaration highlights several expected impacts from the storm, including heavy mixed precipitation, total snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches in central Indiana, light ice glaze accumulations, and winds gusting up to 35 mph.
According to the emergency order, “Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous; travel could be very difficult. The strong winds and the weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commute.”
The emergency declaration allows county officials to activate response and recovery plans, provide aid and assistance, and issue a local travel advisory.
Currently, the county is under a travel warning. This means travel may be restricted to emergency management workers and essential personnel, such as privately-employed healthcare workers, with further restrictions possible as directed by the board.
