Australia Added to UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) List

by Mary

The UK government has added Australia to its list of countries whose citizens must apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling to the UK.

The ETA is not a visa but a digital travel permission for visitors who previously didn’t require a visa. While it was initially required for travelers from several Middle Eastern countries, the list has now expanded to include Australia, New Zealand, the US, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Canada, Norway, and Mexico.

Australian travelers planning to visit the UK from January 8 will need to apply for the ETA through the UK Government website or the UK ETA mobile app, available on both Apple and Android devices. The application fee is £10 (approximately AUD$20), and the ETA will be valid for two years or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first.

The ETA allows multiple entries to the UK during its validity period, permitting stays of up to six months per trip. It must be approved before boarding a flight to the UK, with most applicants receiving a response within three working days.

To apply, Australian travelers will need a valid passport, a digital photo, a credit or debit card for payment, and answers to a series of personal questions. Dual British or Irish citizens do not need an ETA if they are traveling with their British or Irish passport, or any passport containing a certificate of entitlement.
