Starting May 7, 2025, travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005 based on 9/11 Commission recommendations, established security standards for state-issued IDs but has faced multiple delays.
Experts are urging travelers to check their IDs now to avoid problems such as missed or rebooked flights as the deadline approaches. For those without a REAL ID, passports and other approved IDs will still be accepted for travel.
