In response to severe disruptions on Australia’s busiest rail network, NSW Premier Chris Minns has returned early from leave to tackle the ongoing industrial dispute that has resulted in mass train cancellations.
On Wednesday, 1,900 trains were cancelled, with another 1,000 expected to be cancelled on Thursday, leaving commuters stranded. Fewer than three in every 10 morning peak trains were able to run on time.
The premier has requested the Fair Work Commission to intervene and end the work bans imposed by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union in a bid to restore normalcy to the train system.
“We don’t know how many small businesses have been affected by 50% of trains not running,” Premier Minns said, emphasizing the economic impact of the disruptions.
