China Expands Visa-Free Travel to Boost Tourism and Economic Recovery

by Mary

The rise in visa-free travel is closely tied to China’s strategic government initiatives aimed at boosting international tourism. In January 2023, China reopened its borders after nearly three years of strict pandemic-related restrictions. Since then, the country has progressively eased entry requirements, including introducing short-term visa-free transit and unilateral visa waivers with 38 countries. This approach supports China’s broader economic recovery goals, seeking to attract both tourists and foreign investment.

As part of its efforts, China’s State Council unveiled an 18-point action plan designed to enhance consumption. Key to this plan is the expansion of unilateral visa exemptions and longer visa-free stays, measures expected to further boost inbound tourism. This growth is essential for reviving industries such as hospitality, retail, and cultural exchange, which are integral to China’s post-pandemic recovery.
