More than 34 million people are expected to travel both domestically and internationally during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, according to a report from a state-run institute on Tuesday.
The Korea Transport Institute estimates that 34.84 million people will be traveling over the six-day period from Saturday to next Thursday, marking a 29 percent increase compared to last year’s Lunar New Year, which lasted five days.
The busiest travel day is expected to be next Tuesday, with 6.01 million people forecast to travel. On that day, highway traffic is projected to reach 6.39 million vehicles.
Despite the peak travel day, the daily average traffic on highways is expected to decrease by 7.7 percent to 5.02 million vehicles, as the extended holiday helps to spread out travel demand.
To ensure a smooth and safe travel experience, the government is implementing special measures, including opening emergency lanes on major highways and increasing seat availability for public transportation.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has designated a special 10-day transportation period from Friday to February 2 to facilitate convenient and safe travel during the holiday season.
