Australians have revealed the biggest travel risks they expect to face this year, with flight cancellations topping the list, followed by extreme weather events.
According to a recent survey, 76% of Australians anticipate domestic flight cancellations and delays in 2025, while 63% expect disruptions and cancellations for international flights. Extreme weather events were cited as the second biggest risk for domestic trips, with 59% of respondents identifying it as a concern. In comparison, just 38% of travelers view war and geopolitical events as a significant international travel risk.
The findings come from a survey of 1,006 Australians, commissioned by Insure&Go, an award-winning travel insurance provider. The survey also revealed that nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents believe travel risks will be greater this year compared to 2024.
The research coincides with ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as extreme weather events worldwide. In 2024, countries experienced significant weather-related disruptions, including a powerful tornado in the US that left over 500,000 people across four states without power. In April, dangerous heatwaves affected Southeast Asia, while catastrophic flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, resulted in 100 deaths, 130 people missing, and 400 others injured. The UAE also saw its heaviest rainfall in 75 years.
