Canada Invests $43 Million to Boost Rail Connectivity in Northern Manitoba

by Mary

The Government of Canada is making significant investments to ensure safe, reliable, and resilient transportation for rural and remote communities. Minister Terry Duguid announced an investment exceeding $43 million to support the Hudson Bay Railway’s operations and maintenance. Owned by Arctic Gateway Group (AGG), this railway is crucial for 12 isolated communities and is operated in partnership with 29 First Nations in Northern Manitoba.

This investment, funded through Transport Canada’s Remote Passenger Rail Program, aims to secure safe, year-round transportation for 33,000 residents in remote northern and Indigenous communities. Since 2018, the Canadian government has committed $277 million to restoring, operating, and maintaining the Hudson Bay Railway, underscoring its long-term commitment to enhancing connectivity in Northern Manitoba, where road infrastructure is limited.
