A powerful winter storm is expected to bring ice and snow to parts of the central and eastern United States starting Wednesday, leading to widespread travel disruptions and the risk of power outages.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall is expected in some areas, but much of the precipitation will come as a mix of freezing rain and sleet. The storm is expected to begin Wednesday and continue through Thursday.
Forecasters warn that an ice storm will develop from the Midwest to the Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham cautioned that “dangerous amounts of ice buildup” could occur, increasing the risk of tree damage and power outages.
As of Wednesday morning, winter weather advisories were in place across a 1,400-mile stretch from central Oklahoma to eastern Massachusetts, signaling potentially hazardous conditions for millions of residents.
