The FOX Forecast Center is warning that a mix of weather conditions could significantly reduce visibility across southeastern Louisiana in the coming nights, including Super Bowl Sunday in New Orleans.
A combination of warm temperatures, humid air, and smoke from a marsh fire may lower visibility to less than a quarter of a mile, particularly before sunrise.
If these conditions intensify, “superfog” could develop, reducing visibility to just a few feet. According to the National Weather Service, superfog forms when smoke and moisture from damp materials mix with cooler air, creating dangerously low visibility—sometimes less than 10 feet.
This phenomenon is occasionally seen along the Gulf Coast and in Florida during seasonal transitions with warm air.
Louisiana officials are closely monitoring the marsh fire burning in St. Charles Parish. However, due to its remote location and challenging terrain, efforts to fully extinguish the fire remain limited.
