Brownsville Works to Ease Traffic Confusion During Old Highway 77 Closure

by Mary

Motorists are still adjusting to the closure of Old Highway 77 to southbound traffic between Ruben Torres Boulevard and Morrison Road, following the start of a $13 million road reconstruction project in mid-January.

According to Doroteo Garcia Jr., Brownsville’s assistant city manager, the Engineering and Public Works Department has been adding more signs this week to help drivers navigate the changes. Additionally, Brownsville police have been issuing warnings to drivers who fail to obey the new signage.

“The first couple of weeks were really tough,” Garcia said, noting several minor accidents caused by confusion over lane changes. For example, southbound traffic is currently prohibited from turning left onto Ruben Torres from Old Highway 77, and drivers are not allowed to travel southbound for most of the two-mile stretch between Ruben Torres and Morrison Road.
