The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has deployed crews to tackle dangerous driving conditions caused by this week’s winter weather. Officials are advising Richmond drivers to “use the utmost caution” as roads remain wet and temperatures continue to drop.
With temperatures expected to fall overnight, the risk of freezing conditions is increasing. VDOT is urging residents to avoid driving if possible, but those who must travel should proceed with extreme care.
“Tonight and tomorrow morning could be tricky for drivers,” said Austin Anderson, Richmond District infrastructure manager with VDOT. “We ask motorists to stay home, but if they must drive, they should use the utmost caution. Any wet pavement could be slick, especially with low temperatures tonight. Pavement that hasn’t dried may become icy.”
VDOT also advised drivers to be extra cautious on wet roads, near high water, and where ponding may occur. Special attention is needed on bridges, ramps, and overpasses, which are particularly susceptible to ice formation.
