Commuter Chaos in New Jersey: Derailment and Sinkhole Delays Morning Travel

by Mary

Commuters experienced significant delays on multiple New Jersey transit lines following the holiday weekend, due to a freight train derailment in Union County and an iced-over tunnel that disrupted the morning commute.

The derailment occurred just before 7 a.m. on the Conrail-owned section of the Raritan Valley Line near Union Station. New Jersey Transit suspended service in both directions between Cranford and Newark Penn Station. Service gradually resumed, with hourly departures from Raritan to Cranford starting at 11:46 a.m. A modified schedule has been put in place.

In addition, officials reported that repairs to a massive sinkhole in the center lane of I-80 East in Wharton will take longer than initially expected. A modified detour has been established for drivers navigating the area.
