Passengers stranded by Sunwing’s sudden cancellation of all southbound flights from Toronto Pearson Airport are continuing to share their stories of frustration, exhaustion, and uncertainty as they attempt to get home.
Ashley Maclellan-Chartrand, who is six months pregnant, had her Sunwing flight from Cancun canceled three times before finally arriving at Pearson early Wednesday morning. Hundreds of other weary travelers were also left stranded, with many congregating in Terminal 3, surrounded by piles of abandoned luggage.
“It felt apocalyptic,” Maclellan-Chartrand said, describing the scene at the airport. “If you walked through, all you saw was hundreds of abandoned baggage.”
To make matters worse, only one overwhelmed Sunwing staff member was present, repeatedly chanting “Get our bags!” in an attempt to calm the crowd. Maclellan-Chartrand even resorted to taking a nap on the floor while waiting for any updates on the whereabouts of her luggage.
The chaos has been compounded by a backlog caused by last week’s winter storm and Monday’s Delta plane crash at Pearson, which continues to disrupt operations. Passengers were left in limbo as the promised announcements about luggage deliveries never materialized.
